BLS data is widely available. But how should we understand the impact of changes in the job market on demand for academic programs? The BLS’s CIP-SOC crosswalk is widely used to connect job classifications to academic programs, but this leaves much to be desired. Among other limitations, it gives no data on how many students from each CIP code actually enter jobs with each SOC code—let alone in your specific markets.
Here at UQ Solutions, we have developed an estimate of jobs by college major based on the actual behaviors of college graduates in your specific market. Using ACS data, we can tell what percentage of graduates from each major enter each career. We use this same data, then, to calculate how the job prospects for each major are impacted by changes in the job market. (With three sources of salary data, we can also analyze earnings outcomes by program, award level, institution type, geography, career stage, student demographic, and other dimensions.)
It is easy to get overwhelmed by the quantity of jobs data. While we offer several powerful perspectives, we also pull it all together for you in a printable one-page report on job prospects, by college major, in your specific market.
Over the next few weeks, we will be creating a resource that gives you a full overview of our jobs and student career outcomes data. In the meantime, we invite you to reach out to us by email or schedule a call. We would be happy to share with you our jobs data, including our jobs by college major data, for your specific markets.
